We’re raising funds to help our friends who are in a desperate situation after devastating floods in south eastern Spain.
On Friday 13th, our friends were evacuated from their home by the police due to the risk of flooding after days of torrential rain. They were forced to leave their home at short notice by Police, only able to take their 2 rescue dogs with them, leaving behind their 5 rescue cats in the house.
They were still unable to return home on Saturday due to the flooding, and on Sunday morning the unthinkable happened. A river wall failed resulting in millions of gallons of flood water to crash through their home, demolishing it completely.
They have lost everything, their home, their car, their practical and sentimental possessions, and their 5 rescue cats (although one has since been found alive amongst the wreckage). Their livelihoods were also based from home which have also been lost, so they now have very little in the way of income.
The insurance system in Spain doesn’t cover “acts of god”, they have to submit a claim to the government which is likely to take many months before it is settled. Meanwhile they are homeless with just the clothes on their backs from the day they were evacuated.
To make matters more difficult, Richard also suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis, a painful, progressive form of inflammatory arthritis. It mainly affects the spine but can also affect other joints, tendons and ligaments.
We’re raising money to help cover the cost of everything they are going to need to survive over the coming months until the Spanish authorities settle their compensation claim. Clothes, food, accommodation, medication, potential veterinary bills etc - whatever they need whilst they rebuild their lives, and their home.
