Our first introduction to Jeanne and her family was as neighbors 30 years ago; now, we are family. My children affectionately call Jeanne their “second mom.” All the big events in their lives include the Fix family. We are not alone because all who know Jeanne love her. Over the years many children and their parents called Jeanne their “second mom” at her in home daycare. There has never been a child who doesn’t gravitate to Jeanne. In fact, dinners out would often result in a Jeanne playing peek-a-boo with a child at a neighboring table. More recently, she continued to work with middle school children as a food service employee at Patrick Henry where some of her daycare kids got to see her again. If you have met her, you have probably become part of her family just as we have.
In early October, Covid invaded the Fix home. Jeanne tried to weather the storm at home for over a week but it became too much and Steve took her to the hospital. At first, she only needed oxygen to help her breathe. Then, things took a turn and for several weeks, Jeanne was put on a ventilator and heavily sedated. She battled back hard but the virus wasn’t through with her yet. Though she is off the ventilator, her fight isn’t over. She has moved from ICU to a regular room to a rehab unit. It’s hard to believe the woman who walked an hour everyday all summer is struggling to stand for any length of time. Walking will have to wait for now as she works to regain her strength and rehab her lungs so she can go without oxygen. The hope is that she can be home, with her family, by Christmas and she is working hard to get to that point.
The Fix family needs your help. As you can imagine, the medical bills are staggering. While Steve, Tom and Katelyn continue working, paying for 6 weeks of intensive hospital care, intubation, rehab, and medication as well as the usual bills seems insurmountable right now. We want to lift some of that burden so they can concentrate on Jeanne getting better and coming home.
