New Wheels for Danny

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this!

My name is Carrie and this fundraiser is for my brother Danny who, in 1999, was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (a condition that causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass).  He is one of the greatest people that I know and finds it hard to ask for help, so I am asking for help here.

As a child, Danny was energetic, athletic (participating in all sports), and especially fond of football.  Unknowingly, Danny had a condition that would lay dormant until it would slowly cause him to lose his ability to walk amongst other things that we tend to unintentionally take for granted.

My brother doesn’t take pity on himself, and his courage and resistance to give into his condition is what some may consider inspirational.  To know Danny is to love him, you can’t help it.  He is kind, strong willed, intelligent, independent driven and determined to live the life he deserves.

Danny has always worked and refuses to give up his career.  As a result of him working, he is not eligible for most government benefits such as SS disability, home care assistance and other benefits even though he doesn’t make all that much.

The fact that my brother being scooter bound does not simply entitle him to government assistance doesn’t seem fair.  Especially since there is very limited handicap accessible housing that is affordable in this area.

I say all of this to give you an idea of how Danny strives to keep whatever independence he may have.  One of the biggest parts of his independence is his mode of transportation.  He currently has a handicap accessible van that he is forever grateful for; however, the van is 16 years old and the amount of things to repair are piling up.  Although we would love to repair everything, the amount of money it would cost is way more than the van is worth.

Luckily, Danny's employer has helped him in loaning him money to make urgent repairs and allow him to pay it back overtime. I cannot express how grateful and thankful I am for all of the support they have given Danny over the years.

Danny was incredibly fortunate to recently receive a handicap accessible van at no cost; however, modifications need to be made in order for him to drive it.  Some of those modifications are a special driver’s seat that he can transfer into from his scooter, zero effort steering, hand controls and some other costly adjustments.  Unfortunately, these modifications are quite expensive and not covered by insurance.

Knowing that Danny has a reliable vehicle to get him to/from work and for any of his other travels, would be a huge help and relief for him (and me too).

Any help would be greatly appreciated in more ways than people can know.

Thank you!
