There's been so many friends, peers and colleagues that are behind Adam and want to support him where they can in what has been a gruelling year and even harder 2 months. Any funds raised will go straight to Adam and his family to use in anyway they seem fit.
The family has asked that this link not be shared on social media.
Below ive included a snippet from Adams partner Mel as her words hit home and sparked our desire to do this for them.
I had hoped that the new year would begin with the news that Adam is in remission and we could start to put the pieces of our lives back together. Unfortunately, on January 2, our world came crashing down around us again. Adam’s cancer was not only still active, it had spread. How is this possible? Since Adam began chemotherapy last April, he has been feeling so well. He continued teaching all throughout his treatment, his energy was good, he played footy with the boys, and we often went on long coastal walks together. If we didn’t know he was sick, we wouldn’t have known. You wouldn’t have known if you bumped into him on the street.
Unfortunately, the location of one of the tumors is his spine. We had to be urgently admitted to the hospital so that they could ensure Adam didn’t suffer any permanent nerve damage. We also had a decision to make. Adam could start a clinical trial in Adelaide which involved chemo, a stem cell transplant, and a new immunotherapy drug. The other option is CAR T-Cell Therapy. However, CAR T is only available in Melbourne, which would mean that Adam and I would have to relocate for 6 weeks.
After a brutal 6 days which included IV steroids, blood tests, MRIs, ECHO, a biopsy, and a lumbar puncture, we were told that the best treatment option for Adam is CAR T-Cell Therapy at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center. The following day, Adam and I were on a flight to Melbourne. We are here now having initial consultations with the hematologists and on Monday, they will harvest his T cells. We will go back to Adelaide for 3 weeks while his cells get modified into cancer flighting cells, and Adam will receive chemo. On February 3rd, we will return to Melbourne and Adam will be admitted so T cells can be returned to Adam’s body and hopefully destroy all of the active cancer cells in his body.
We are struggling to access joy and hope right now. We have had so many disappointing and devastating conversations, that it is hard to imagine a positive conversation coming. But it absolutely can come, and I hope with all my heart that it will. The goal of this treatment is to totally CURE Adam’s cancer. That is not always the case with second line treatment, so for that we are thankful. We are thankful that Adam’s spine MRI, brain MRI, and lumbar puncture confirmed that the cancer has not moved to his spinal fluid or brain. Additionally, medical coverage in Australia is incredible. Not only is the entire treatment covered, they also pay for all of our flights and accommodation while we are in Melbourne. Lastly, the timing of this is amazing as CAR T-Cell therapy only became available as the second line of treatment in the last 2-3 weeks. There are moments of gratitude amongst the despair.
This is so hard to write. It is even harder to believe. 2024 was a remarkably brutal year for our family on many levels, and we were so hopeful for 2025. But I keep reminding myself that while this year is starting as the year that Adam is sick, it can also be the year that Adam is HEALED. This is the deepest desire of our hearts, that Adam would be healed from this disease and that we can continue our lives together with the boys. I will post updates more regularly as we move throughout this process. We need our community more than ever, even though it is scattered all over the world.
We so appreciate any prayers, positive thoughts, intentions, vibes-anything set on Adam’s healing and finding the courage to face what is ahead. Though this is an amazing treatment, it is not a sure thing. Nothing with cancer ever is. I will write specific requests below:
-That the T cell harvesting would be successful and that they would be turned into the most aggressive and unstoppable cancer fighters possible
-That Adam’s boys (Josh and Nate) would be at peace knowing their Dad is in wonderful hands and getting the very best treatment
-For Adam’s parents (Vicky and Richard) as they take on full-time care of the boys. They have been amazing and completely selfless on every step of this journey. It would be impossible without them.
-That Adam’s body would respond well to this chemo prior to his transfusion, shrinking the tumors as much as possible before February
-That the transfusion would be successful and destroy the cancer in Adam’s body. That once the cancer is gone, it is GONE
-For the doctors and nurses at PeterMac
-For Adam, for his heart and his mind
Thank you ❤️
