Help me take neurodiversity in cycling to the Sea Otter Australia Industry Summit.

Why This Matters To Me

For me, mountain and adventure biking have never simply been sports. They have been a way of making sense of the world.

I’m a lifelong mountain biker and endurance racer, as well as a physiotherapist and outdoor writer. My AuADHD diagnosis came very late in life, which completely changed my understanding of why mountain biking and adventure cycling have always been so much more than simply a sport.

These outdoor sports have given me a place to find clarity, self-regulate, build confidence, develop resilience and form connections that I have otherwise found difficult to make. Perhaps, most importantly, they have given me a space where I can be my authentic self, away from many of the pressures, expectations and sensory and social demands of everyday life.

For many neurodivergent people, mountain biking, cycling and outdoor recreation can offer something incredibly valuable: opportunities for regulation, confidence, connection and belonging.

But There Is A Gap

The problem is that good intentions don't always translate into inclusive practice.

Many of the organisations, coaches and others creating outdoor experiences want to be inclusive, but don’t yet have the understanding or practical tools to effectively support neurodivergent participants.

I want to help change that.

I’m a confirmed speaker at the Sea Otter Australia Summit —an opportunity to put neurodiversity in front of people who influence how cycling and outdoor experiences are designed, delivered and accessed.

I’m raising €3,400 to help me get there and deliver this work.

I've already taken this conversation to:

  • IMBA Europe Summit 2025.
  • Kendal Mountain Festival 2025.
  • Beicio Cymru's Coaches' Corner — professional development webinar
  • Workshops within the local mountain sports community.

Sea Otter Australia is an opportunity to take the next step.

The Summit brings together people working across cycling, outdoor recreation, education, coaching, tourism, land management and the wider cycling industry.

This isn’t simply about raising awareness. It’s about turning awareness into practical action, giving those people practical ideas they can take away, develop and use.

My presentation combines lived experience, professional knowledge and evidence-informed practice to explore how coaches, educators and organisations can create more inclusive outdoor environments—places where neurodivergent people can learn in ways that work for them, feel understood and seen rather than being judged, and have the freedom to be their authentic selves.

Relatively simple changes to communication, coaching and the environments we create can make a meaningful difference to neurodivergent participants, including those with co-occurring neurotypes such as AuADHD.

And the conversation won't stop at the presentation.

During Sea Otter Australia, I also want to organise informal community rides where riders, coaches, educators and others can come together to talk about neurodiversity in a relaxed, non-judgmental environment.

Sometimes the most valuable conversations happen on a bike, riding alongside someone who understands.

What Your Support Will Help Fund

I’m travelling from Europe to Australia to deliver this presentation, and your contribution will help cover:

  • International travel from Europe to Australia - €2,500
  • Accommodation, 6 nights - €600
  • Local transport - €300
  • Total - €3, 400

Every contribution, large or small, will help make this project possible.

And if you can't donate, sharing this campaign will make a real difference too. Please consider sharing it with friends, riders, coaches, educators, outdoor organisations and others in the outdoor community who believe that the outdoors should be a place where people can belong.

Supporting Brands And Organisations

I’m also inviting cycling, outdoor and adventure brands and organisations to become part of the project.

This is an opportunity to support a practical, positive conversation about what genuine neurodiversity inclusion can look like in cycling and outdoor recreation — and to help that conversation reach a wider audience.

This Doesn't End With Sea Otter

Sea Otter Australia isn’t the end goal. It’s one step in something much bigger.

Through workshops, talks and educational webinars, I want to help build a future where understanding neurodiversity becomes an integral part of inclusive outdoor practice.

I want to help outdoor educators, coaches, trail organisations, land managers and cycling leaders not only better understand neurodiversity, but know what they can do differently in practice.

Because for some of us, the outdoors is much more than about being active.

It can be where we regulate.

Where we build confidence.

Where we connect with other people.

Where we discover what we’re capable of.

And sometimes, it’s one of the few places where we feel completely ourselves.

If you can help me take that message to Sea Otter Australia — through a donation, sponsorship or simply by sharing this campaign — thank you.

Your support will help take this conversation further.
