Getting a Car for the Niazi Family

Hi, my name is Dave. My family and I are volunteers with the Immigrant and Refugee Outreach Center (IROC), a Virginia-based nonprofit focused on assisting refugees resettling in the United States and helping to ease their burden as they adjust to life in their new country.

Last fall we were partnered with the Niazi Family, an Afghan family of 5, Abdul, Hangama, and their three children (1, 3, 5), who were evacuated after the fall of Kabul to a U.S. Military base in Qatar. After clearing the necessary background checks, the family was permitted to come to the US in the fall of 2022.

Thanks to IROC and generous volunteers and supporters, they've been set up with an apartment in Maryland and provided with clothing, food, and basic supplies. Abdul, who worked as an IT specialist in Afghanistan (supporting the previous government), has been working various jobs, but is hoping to pursue work in auto maintenance. For that, however, he needs a reliable car to get to work and to help his family get around (their apartment is a bit isolated). Both Abdul and Hangama have secured Maryland Driver's licenses.

Through his Afghani network in Maryland, Abdul was been able to find a vehicle, a 2010 Toyota Corolla, but needs assistance in collecting the funds to cover the cost. They've saved $1,500 for the downpayment and we've agreed to help him cover the balance, which will be paid in monthly installments of $500 (or in a lump sum) depending on the success of this fundraiser.

The Niazis are a sweet and loving family who have been through a lot together. We've visited with them at their home several times and they are wonderfully gracious hosts. They are very reluctant to ask for more than they need. We are hopeful that our generous community of friends and family will consider contributing to support this important addition to their new life in our country.

All funds contributed to this fundraiser will go to the Niazi family to assist in the purchase of a used 2010 Toyota Corolla.
