I moved to Texas in March of 2020 to get out of a bad situation and to live with my partner. My partner and I now need help leaving Texas to move to New Mexico to access better healthcare and quality of life.
In the two years I've lived in Texas, my health has deteriorated. Back in Virginia I had medicaid, and access to social services that helped me access the care I needed. I was making progress, seeing PTs and therapists and able to stay on my medications without fear of affording them. In Texas, I don't qualify for medicaid. Every doctor I've spoken to in the last two years has set me back so far in my progress that I'm all but giving up on my healthcare until we can move to a better place. I'm in pain every day and can't afford to see any specialists for anything at all while in Texas. New Mexico has expanded medicaid and I should be able to get the help I need there.
Additionally, my partner has NEVER had medical care for anything less than an emergency as long as she's lived, living in Texas. She's had an infected ingrown nail for two years that a doctor here took her money to do absolutely nothing to help. My partner has so many longterm health issues that have been completely ignored and we need to live somewhere we can both get care.
The apartment we are currently stuck in has mold in the air vents, a balcony that's pulling away from the building more and more, a fridge that randomly shuts off and thaws our food, a dishwasher falling out of the cabinets, no working kitchen light, doorknobs falling off, a toilet that needs major fixes, and so many other issues. Every single time we report an issue, they fix maybe half the problem then leave more or new issues. Last time we reported multiple issues they just came in to take photos then left without ever making repairs or helping. This is the same place we had no running water for 8 days and it holds a lot of trauma and frustration for us.
We're asking for 10k to get this plan rolling, but depending on our ability to find housing, this amount will likely go up. We want to be able to pay off the last few months of our current lease so that we can start packing up and seriously looking at places. We want to rent a place to stay for a month in the area of NM that we're looking once we have our current lease paid off, and use that month to find more permanent residency. We will likely end up needing to raise enough for a full six month lease once we do this, so we can have a place to live while finding work and getting medical/social help set up. We also intend on using some of the money to change our oil and get our squeaky breaks checked before the move.
This is all very intimidating for me and I'm sorry if any information is unclear. I'll be uploading bills and documents here occasionally as "proof" to keep track of things as they're done. We don't really know what we're doing but as it stands we're facing homelessness in Texas and this seems like a better plan than that.
