#GetMePPE for Ontario’s Healthcare Workers
Donation protected
Hospitals and frontline providers are running out of PPE, fast. Most are being forced to ration masks and other items well beyond what is recommended, putting themselves at greater risk to contract COVID-19 and spread it to their colleagues, patients, and families. Many of these healthcare workers are our friends and family. We need to do whatever we can to keep them safe.
We started this fundraiser because, like many others, we have friends and family who are being put at risk. We are asking for donations to purchase and distribute surgical masks and reusable 3D printed face shields to Ontario hospitals in need. Our fundraiser is not the only one out there; however, it is our hope that a multiplicity of efforts from different sources will be able to donate PPE to as many hospitals and frontline providers as possible.
Any donated funds will go directly towards covering item and shipping costs. Any individuals involved in the process are doing so completely voluntarily. The costs of PPE are rising, and we have included some cost estimates below. In an effort to comply with Canadian safety standards, we will only procure masks that are at least Level I certified. The 3D printed face shields have been tested and approved by the hospitals we will be donating them to.
At the time of writing, the purchase and shipping price of one mask is an estimated $0.79 CAD. This means that with a $20 donation, you can provide 25 surgical masks to a healthcare worker in need. By current rationing, that’s an additional 2 weeks of supply for one provider. The price of one reusable face shield is $16.10 CAD after a 30% in-kind discount.
For distribution, we will work with community partners (e.g. http://communitysos.org/) to make every effort to send masks where they are needed most. We are also working with hospital donation teams to ensure that the donated products meet hospital standards and will actually be useful to providers.
We all know people who are putting their lives at risk so that we can overcome this pandemic, and anything that you can donate will help keep them safe.
Thank you for your compassion,
