I’ve been accepted and invited to partake in Emerson College’s Global Pathways Summer Program, "Art, Theater, and Culture," in Barcelona, Spain. This 4 week summer program will explore visual and performing arts, two closely integrated artistic explorations and experiences, that are oftentimes viewed as different entities, in the mediterranean enriched culture of Barcelona. I currently am working towards an all encompassing artistic process where I integrate several art mediums to create my work as an artist and educator.
As an artist, and as a future educator, my main goal is to master the integration of storytelling and civic engagement. I see the bridging of art and education as a revolutionary and cathartic act. As an artist myself, I look to tell the stories of my life, the stories of my enlightened ancestors, and overall communicate my personal truth as a woman of color in the United States. Although, telling my story and the story of my people may seem as a more individualistic act and may be overlooked as an act of Civic Engagement, communicating my subjective truth sheds light on an objective truth and can then create space for community building, the spread of knowledge, and thus creates a difference through listening, performance, and dialogue.
In the same light, as an educator, I look to work with young people, specifically young people of color to help give them varied resources to tell their own stories. I look to be a multifarious arts educator and give my students several artistic outlets where they can communicate the stories living within and around them in whichever way they see fit. I’ve never heard of Arts Education or more specifically, Theater Arts Education being seen in this light. Arts education in my experience, has been nearly impossible to find in impoverished communities or communities with high concentrations of people of color. In the rare circumstances of Arts Education in these communities, the arts are viewed as separate entities, instead of a part of an all encompassing force that is art and it’s ability to communicate truth and create a difference in our young people and our communities.
This is why this opportunity is important to me. I, a young person of color, haven’t really had the opportunity to put these ideas of all encompassing artistic force being fundamental in my artistic process and educational approach. This program can help me further explore these ideas, and deepen my understanding of them, while also learning and creating in Barcelona. Especially because this specific program focuses on the integration of visual and performance art.
It will be very difficult to raise $8,000 by myself, to partake in this opportunity, that I know is beyond necessary for my advancement as an artist and future educator. Although, this campaign is only a fraction of what I need, I am applying to several other scholarships, and am moving mountains to ensure that this opportunity will be a reality for me this summer. I know, as a student and worker, I deserve to partake in this opportunity, despite my financial standing. And deep in my heart I know, like everything else in my life, I will make this work. I thank you for all of your support, whether it be monetary or not. 1luv <3
