YOUR ACT OF KINDNESS WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
This fall, Mr. Hills suddenly became ill with what we only know to be a mystery illness. Instead of healthy 5th grade banter, singing, joking and working away on math and science, Mr. Hills has traded his days in to take countless tests at the hospital.
Since November, Mr Hills has had to take time off from what he loves most, so he can focus on getting better. Unfortunately, during this time the medical bills are adding up and he is not receiving a pay check.
Let's join together to help Mr Hills during this difficult time and show him how much we care. Every amount small or large will make a big difference and best of all your support will bring a smile to Mr Hills knowing just how much his students care!
Mr Hills is hoping to return to the classroom in the next few weeks, healthy and strong, but in the meantime your support will help him while he undergoes medical treatment for his mystery illness.

MR HILLS: An ELF'S STORY:

Mr. Hills has lived in the Roaring Fork Valley for over 20 years. He originally hails from Cumbria, England in the North of England and just on the border of Scotland. That is where his English brogue comes from! He is a keen hiker, had taught 5th grade in New Castle, Colorado for over 10 years, and has been a ski instructor in Aspen. Some students and friends compare Mr. Hills to Buddy the Elf due to his exuberance for life and joy he conveys both inside the classroom and out in the world!
Mr. Hills suddenly became ill this past fall with what we only know to be a mystery illness. He suddenly presented with all sorts of strange things happening such as fainting, a racing heart, elevated blood pressure, vomiting, and worst of all confusion! He has been through many tests over the last few months since he ended up at the hospital a few times and had to get checked out by Emergency room doctors! It has been the first time in his life since he has had to yell 'Emergency' in his British voice! Since November, Mr. Hills has greatly missed seeing his 5th grade students at Aspen Middle School. Instead of healthy 5th grade banter, singing, joking and working away on math and science, Mr. Hills has traded his days in to take countless tests at the hospital. He has had to trade his hiking trainers for a heart monitor, and his white board, numbers and experiments for echocardiograms, MRIs, bloodwork, CT scans, swallow test, and even a big xray of his brain!! All Mr. Hills has to say about this is needles are not fun for anyone, especially an elf like himself.
Mr. Hills says even though he is battling with a mystery illness, he is still chipper. And just like Buddy the Elf, smiling is still his favorite thing to do!
Mr. Hills has recently had to take leave and this has broken his little, elfish heart! He misses the classroom and most of all his students, but he knows it is what must be done. Mr. Hills is rarely ill so it's been a surprising and stressful occurence to say the least. He has gone from teaching about heart rate with the boxing gloves to his students, with his own resting heart rate in the 40s, now skyrocketed into the 100s and beyond!
Mr. Hills has an Elf partner, Dianna, who also works at Aspen Middle School. She is the 7th and 8th grade Speech Pathologist. Dianna has had to work remote this school year because she is high risk, and catching Covid would land her in the hospital alongside Mr. Hills. We can't have two elves roaming the halls of the hospital at once! Since Mr. Hills has been on leave, Dianna has been continuing to work teaching speech to ensure that her students do not end up speaking in silly British brogues like Mr. Hills. She has also been caring for the mischievous elf, Mr. Hills, shuttling him to appointments and carrying the financial burden of lost wages and paying for a silly thing that Mr. Hills has encountered during his time in the States, insurance premiums!
Mr. Hills is so happy that he had back up from substitutes Georgina and Oscar and the senior elf, Amy Gray, as well as the staff at Aspen School District. Being involved in boxing, Mr. Hills says, "I will never allow anyone to count 10 standing over me." Mr. Hills is a positive little elf, and he is fighting his way back to health. We wonder if this mystery illness is from Mr. Hills eating too much candy and especially putting syrup on his spaghetti. If you could see it in your heart to help an Elf teacher out, Buddy would be proud!
