On Monday, August 17, my mother Marty Jo Hawkins Susong was rushed to Morristown Hamblen Hospital. Suffering from acute encephalopathy, hypertension and pneumonia, Marty was sedated and intubated for over a week before being transferred to UT Medical Center in Knoxville. After less than 12 hours at UT, her condition began improving, and her recovery continues on an upward trend.
Like millions of other Americans, my mother does not have health insurance. There are programs at both MHHS and UTMC that will help cover most (if not all) of the bills related to her hospital stays.
What these programs will not cover, however, are costs associated with her recovery. My mother will need items such a walker, shower chair and easy ways to eat healthy meals to help her journey back to wellness.
Extended hypertension caused some neurological damage that will take time and attention to address. I do not want my mother or father to worry about getting the things they need to aid in my mother's recovery. This is where y'all come in to the picture!
I plan to set my parents up with a Hello Fresh meal subscription for easy and healthful meals for them to cook at home (each week costs $60.93 for three meals for two people). I dream of being able to set them up with two full months of this service so they will not have to worry about going to the grocery store (meal trains are a nice idea, but she doesn't need comfort food right now). Mom will need a new walker (appx. $150) and shower chair (appx. $50). Creature comforts like new blankets and bedsheets will cost are $150, too.
We are so grateful for the financial assistance programs available at the hospitals! Mom will hopefully be home from the hospital by Friday, September 4, and it would be great to have a cushion for her when she gets home.
I will be administering these funds directly to her bank account, and anything you can donate will be appreciated beyond words. Thank you to everyone who has offered support, counsel, prayers and kind words during this time. You are appreciated.
