Summary:
UBC Squash now has its first-ever competitive team of 8 players, and 4 athletes have been selected to compete at the 2026 Jesters Canadian University and College Championship. We need your help to cover travel costs and get our players to Montreal for nationals in January!
Our Story
Just one year ago, UBC Squash started as a brand new student-run club created by two graduate students who wanted squash to exist at the University of British Columbia, a school with over 60,000 students, but no squash courts and no current squash community.
In our first year, we had no idea what would happen. Would we have 10 players? Would anyone show up? Would a competitive team even be possible?
Fast forward to today, and the growth has been incredible:
- Over 60 members in our club
- Weekly sessions hosted at Vancouver Racquets Club and now Vancouver Lawn Tennis Clubas well!
- Players ranging from absolute beginners to international competitors
- And most exciting of all… we now have a competitive team training weekly together!
Last year, we were proud to send 3 students to Nationals (pictured in the cover photo), and that experience played a key role in building the competitive program we have today. This was only possible with the financial support we received from the squash community, and we are so grateful to you all!
This year, with the support of the Vancouver squash community, we launched UBC’s first official competitive squash program. Our competitive team consists of 8 student athletes who train weekly at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club and represent UBC at tournaments throughout the season.
After months of training and selection matches, 4 athletes (our top two women and men) have earned the opportunity to represent UBC at the 2026 Canadian University Squash Championships. This year, the Championships will once again be hosted by McGill University, taking place January 23-25.
The athletes we will be sending to Montreal in January are:
- Mattheus Bicknell (Vancouver, BC)
- Jaden Lee (Vancouver, BC)
- Khushi Goyal (Regina, SK)
- Chloe Deserre (Victoria, BC)
Our main costs for this trip are $1800 for 4 sets of return flights, and $1000 for 2 nights' accomodation for the players, with a total estimated cost (without food) of $2800.
Although we are putting in an application to UBC for funding to cover our travel expenses, this funding is not guaranteed, and likely will not cover the full amount. We are therefore aiming to raise an additional $2,000 to fully cover travel, accommodation, and competition costs for our athletes.
Thank you in advance for your interest and generosity. Every contribution, big or small, helps make this opportunity possible for our student athletes.
