Oasis Pathways Academy is a community school providing vital educational opportunities to children in Tongo, Ghana.
Founded and directed by Hawa Bangrey, and her late husband Dan Bangrey, Oasis supports promising students, many of whom would otherwise have no access to formal schooling.
Hawa and Dan's guiding belief is that everyone should have the right to learn. Their deep understanding of the systemic barriers to school attendance in Northern Ghana have driven them to create multilayered safety nets, through which no child is allowed to fall. The Academy’s holistic framework aims to empower parents through sustainable livelihood opportunities including dry season farming at a dam built by them, and jobs in tourism at the Tongo Oasis guesthouse. Their efforts have been transformational to many young people in Tongo, but the school is now confronted with an issue they cannot yet overcome.
The two school buses which transport children from rural communities to Oasis Pathways are old and broken. One needs a new engine, at an estimated cost of 50,000 Ghana cedis, or £3220. The other needs several new parts including a starter, battery, alternator and clutch. This will cost around 8,000 Ghana Cedis or £500. In ideal world, this second bus would be replaced completely. The estimated cost for this is 70,000 Ghana cedis, or £5,000.
Any money raised in excess of these targets will be reinvested in a hardship fund to finance uninterrupted schooling for children in cases of loss of parental income.
