We've been accepted to present at The Association for Humanist Sociology 2019 conference in El Paso, Texas, USA and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico! Our presentation will be Barriers Beyond the Walls: Boundary-Crossing in Prison for Community Building, Movement Building, and Social Change.
This workshop will be facilitated by the Graterford Think Tank, a group of incarcerated and non-incarcerated scholars who work together to further raise public awareness of issues related to the criminal legal system and provide opportunities for engagement across the physical and social boundaries it creates. We offer experiences meant to foster intellectual analysis, relationship-building, and critical reflection in order to address our communities’ most pressing issues. As a group, we model boundary-crossing in the deep community we have built with one another over several years of collaboration, and explore boundary-crossing as a way to build a movement of multiple stakeholders to end mass incarceration, end direct and structural violence, and build more just communities working together. We utilize the situated knowledge and multiple perspectives needed to understand barriers from both sides of the wall to pursue shared pathways forward towards social change. Outside members (6-10) will attend in person, and incarcerated members (11) will phone in to co-lead components of the workshop.
Because of our varied lived experiences and positionalities, some of us are able to lean on institutional resources for logistics such as travel, lodging, and food, while others of us do not have access to such resources. We're asking for funds to help balance those inequities and create the space for us to have a transformational collective experience. Please give what you can and share with your communities.
