What’s Happening?
Michael has been accepted to the University of Cambridge (yes, the England one) to begin his PhD in Philosophical Theology with a fully funded scholarship!
The three of us (Michael, Emma, and our cat Haku) will be moving to Cambridge at the end of September. The program will take him 3-4 years to complete, but then he’ll be "Dr. Wilcher." He thinks it’s fancy. We're sad to be leaving our family and friends (it's not a forever thing, guys), but this is a really exciting chapter for us.
What We’ll Be Doing
Michael will be wrapped up in full-time PhD research. He’s happy to bore you with the details if you ask him. It’s something about Kierkegaard, recognition, and undercover cop movies.
Emma will find work either in a coffee shop or remotely which will hopefully leave her with the time and means to take the occasional daytrip to someplace she's never seen in Europe while Michael is locked away in a library doing… whatever.
Haku will split his time evenly between egregious acts of violence and unconsciousness.
Why We Need Your Help
Michael's scholarship, the Trinity Studentship in Theology, covers his school fees, some basic living expenses, and the cost of his flight, visa, and NHS surcharge at the PhD rate, so you might be wondering, "Why the fundraiser?"
The simple answer: it costs a lot to move across an ocean, and the scholarship doesn't cover anything for Emma.
The detailed answer:
- Emma’s NHS Surcharge: $4,606.50
- Shipping Our Belongings: ~$2,262
- Our first two weeks of living the in the UK at an Airbnb*: $2,000
- Emma’s Visa + Flight: ~$1,546
- Our Ferry from Amsterdam to the UK†: ~$300
How You Can Help:
- Donate to this GoFundMe!
- Share it with your friends!
- Buy our stuff on Facebook Marketplace!
- For Hampton Roads residents, ask us about our upcoming “estate sale.”
- Reach out to us!
*In the unlikely even that we do find a permanent home before getting to the UK, we’d use that money for a deposit on an apartment.
†To fly directly to the UK with our cat would cost us an extra $4500+ on top of the cost for our own flights (~$900 each, so 5x as much just for the furball). That's why we're flying to Amsterdam first and then taking a ferry to the UK.
