Get The HECK Outta Here

I moved out to Lincoln,  Nebraska six years ago to start over and get my career going.      Since arriving here,  I've had on average five jobs per year.

Lincoln,   Nebraska positioned itself as a career destination for technical professionals such as myself.       However this was a lie,  and a very serious one at that.   All jobs out here are basically "general labor" -- heavy lifting,  heavy construction,   cleaning,  warehouse/truck load-unload.      There are virtually zero machine shop, plastic technical or other industrial-technical jobs in the region.      When a job openup with those types of description it is always a bait-and-switch.   More often than not you don't realize it until you are well into the hiring process or you actually start the job.

Great example was the "wire crimping assembly job."     Stand at a bench,  cut wires to length using a fixture,   crimp them according to the diagram,  and test finished assemblies with a meter.      Half way through the hiring process I was trying to lift 100 pound boxes from ground to overhead at a timed rate.    When I asked the hiring manager why I would be required to do so,  he replied "We don't have very much wiring work,   we are mostly looking to fill our warehouse positions and that is a heavy lifting position."

Nonsense like this has once again driven me into a near-zero-income position.  I am in danger of losing the roof over my head and defaulting on a nearly paid car loan.

What I am looking to do with the money raised is simple -- return to "home."   That's Upstate NY.       Even though the cost of living is hire and a lot of jobs are temp-to-gone type work,  there is enough light industrial and technical-gig-work that I can make a living and not worry about long periods of unemployment.    Further,  workplace protections are much greater -- when I lived in NY I never had an employer tell me a warehouse job was a senior technical job.    There is also the question of pay -- I've never had an employer pay me with a bad check in NY or suddenly "forget" to do payroll.

A breakdown of how the funds will be used:

1)  Immediately catch up car bills,  put new tires on car.  $500.

2)  Pack up my living quarters into the back of the SUV, and head east.  ($500 in gas and motel and occasional roadside snack.)

3)  Set up an apartment in or outside of Buffalo,  NY -- $1500-1900.   I have six or more leads on inexpensive apartments I can put into play instantly.

4)  On arrival,  apply for work at one of the "instant hire" employment services in or around Buffalo and begin working.

5)  Settle in and rebuild my network of friends and contacts and actually find a job if not a career once more.

The majority of the funds will be a financial reserve while step 4 is underway.   I have some cash on hand,  and I can pawn or garage-sale quite a bit of stuff to build that out further.    I am also looking for part-time work,   but with the way this region is,  it doesn't appear I'm going to find retail work either.

This is the best option I have at the moment to get the fuck out of here and get everything restarted back "home" in NY.   For all the stuff that goes on there,   I really regret leaving for Nebraska.

Especially in light of the dishonesty of Nebraskans in general and the overall despondent dystopian outlook of the majority of the people here.
