ABOUT THE COMPANY
Established in 1991, Double Edge Drama has become a name synonymous with exceptional theatre and has launched the careers of such actors as Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne. The Drop of a Hat (an original play by Poppy Scales) is their latest achievement and its young stars- Marcus Scales, Obum Onwu and Billy Hobbs- are certainly ones to look out for. Between them, the cast have amassed such accolades as: the Eton Drama Award, the Director of Drama Award, the Loder Declamation Prize and House Duologue Competition
ABOUT THE SHOW
Set against the backdrop of wartime Europe, The Drop of a Hat follows the reluctant partnership of head-in-the-clouds idealist Private Monty Farrer and the world weary Sergeant Schulz, an American with a dark secret. Thrust together by the hilariously hopeless Colonel Marmont, the pair are charged with delivering a top-secret message hidden in the lining of a hat… by parachuting into Nazi-occupied France. What could possibly go wrong?
A three-man comedy blending farce and philosophy, The Drop of a Hat is an exploration of war, hope and the humanity found in even the bleakest of times. With razor-sharp dialogue, heart-rending poignancy and cast of eccentric characters, The Drop of a Hat is an unforgettably biting commentary on the absurd futility of war, with laughs and gut punches in equal measure. Although set during the Second World War, the narrative and themes uncomfortably mirror those of our modern landscape and we hope that once the laughter subsides, our audiences will be left reflecting on what it means to be alive in a broken world.

Billy Hobbs:
Having recently completed my A-Level exams, I’m now dedicating my time to acting and developing our original comedy, At the Drop of a Hat. I’ve performed in numerous school productions over the years, often in lead roles, and have recently begun submitting self-tapes for major auditions. Acting is a true passion of mine, and I strive to bring energy and depth to every role I take on.
Working on At the Drop of a Hat has been an exciting and creatively rewarding experience. Collaborating with a younger cast and director has given me greater freedom to explore and shape my character in new ways. I’m proud of what we’ve created together, and I hope you enjoy the show as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing it to life.
Marcus Scales:
Since stepping onto the stage aged 5 in a production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ acting has been a central part of my life. From Sam in Annie Baker’s ‘Flick’ to the Australian Bob Acres in Richard Bean’s ‘Jack Absolute Flies Again’ and the American patriot Ross in ‘A Few Good Men’ I’ve enjoyed it all and can’t wait to show everyone what we have in store for the Fringe!
Obum Onwu:
Productions with Marcus and Billy over the past five years has been the absolute highlight of my time at school. With the both of them, I’ve tackled Avery in The Flick, Rothko in Red, and Sir Anthony in Jack Absolute Flies Again. I’ve always loved stories - from playing make-believe for much longer than I should have when I was younger to reading English Literature at University - and working on The Drop of a Hat has taken it to a new level. The show is hilarious and challenging in equal measure, and we are beyond excited to offer something fresh and thrilling to the Fringe.
