Get Tauryn to Med School

Becoming a doctor, a surgeon specifically, has always been a dream of mine. As a psychology/neuroscience major at Boston College who will be graduating in December, and studying for the MCAT, I am so close to making that dream a reality.

In Fall of 2014, my freshman year of college, I suffered a traumatic brain injury that was devastating to my academics, as well as my mental health. I had significant memory loss, crippling anxiety, was unable to study or retain information, and had to take a semester of medical leave from school. As a premed STEM student, there could not have been a worse outcome.

After returning from medical leave, my grades drastically improved and I was slowly able to rebuild my GPA by focusing solely on my classes and volunteer work. This huge setback restricted me from participating in undergraduate research and other opportunities such as studying abroad, but I’ve worked incredibly hard the past four years to build up other aspects of my life so that my medical school applications will be just as worthy of admission as my peers. I’ve led multiple service trips with Students Helping Honduras, where groups of fellow college students raised money and participated in building schools in deserving villages across Honduras. I am also the Chief Operating Officer at LIT2LIFT, a fitness brand that promotes health, wellness, and the importance of physical activity. Following graduation, I plan to work full time as a licensed Emergency Medical Technician, volunteer with the Boston Healthcare for the Homeless program, as well as shadow a neurologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. My path to medical school is definitely not the traditional one, but that’s okay because I know the work that I need to put in to make it happen.

But as you know, med school tuition is incredibly expensive, and the price of preparing for med school is equally alarming. I started this GoFundMe to help alleviate some of the financial stress that comes with this process. The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is an 8 hour exam that tests your knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, research practices, etc. It is necessary for medical school and most post baccalaureate programs, and it is imperative that I do well.

Where exactly will your money be going?

- Kaplan MCAT Prep Course - $1400 (Jan-Feb 2019)
           - This MCAT prep course guarantees a higher MCAT score. This  course offers over 100 hours of in person instruction, 11 practice exams, and thousands of other practice materials. The course is adapted to the needs of each student, and can be retaken as a refresher up to a year after enrollment.
- MCAT Exam Fee - $315
- Med School Application Fees & Plane Tickets for Interviews - $1000
- Massachusetts EMT License fee - $150
- Other fees (i.e Transportation for car-less Tauryn) - $135
TOTAL: $3,000

Following the MCAT, I will be applying to a post baccalaureate program in order to finish the prerequisites for medical school and strengthen my background in research, in hopes of direct matriculation to a medical school after.

Why support me?

Only around 6% of surgeons and physicians are black, and black women doctors are even more rare. The Center for Disease Control reports that black women are 22% more likely to die of heart disease than white women, 71% more likely to die from cervical cancer, and an astounding 243% more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth-related causes. These concerning statistics are not exclusive to lower class or uneducated black women. The medical field holds an implicit bias, and doctors admit to not listening to black women. The mortality rate amongst black women is unacceptable; the black community needs to be represented in the medical field and needs advocates for their health. This motivates me every day.

Moreover, I sincerely love helping and healing people - my passion for medicine is unmatched. I’ve worked tirelessly to get where I am today, and without financial help I will be forced to slow my momentum and put my dreams on hold until I can afford it. I will be working full time, but with the cost of living in Massachusetts being so high, there is no way I can pay for these expenses by myself. Please help me get to medical school and make the difference I was born to make!

Every donation helps, and any amount is appreciated. If you cannot donate at this time, please share this page! Feel free to comment if you have any questions about where these funds will be allocated or my journey to becoming a doctor. Thank you for your support!
