Dear Selila Fan Club,
If you’re like me, I so often ask our dear friend, “how can I help?” And like most of you all, I probably get the same response each time: “Thanks, but I got this!” And she does. I mean, how many other people do you know who can brave cancer (and a full time gig) while maintaining their ridiculously clever sense of humor?
Selila currently uses a combination of custom leg braces, a cane, and a walker to get around. Having recently returned to work at GWU (all the way down in Foggy Bottom, people!), she’s finding the routine (walking - Metro – more walking) pretty rough. Add in to that frustrating mix that passengers on crowded Metro trains often don’t make room for her and her walker, leaving her to wait for several trains to pass before being able to board. The entire process is exhausting…and this is before her work day even begins!
But, my friends, this is where we come in. Selila was mentioning how much easier the commute (and life) would be with the aid of a motorized scooter, which will not surprise you to learn is not covered by insurance. We did a little digging and found several used models in and around the DMV area. For all those times you asked, “what can I do?”…here’s your chance!
Let’s raise enough $ to get Selila to work (and to chemo, and to the pharmacy, and to the rare outing to a movie at the Uptown). $3,000 will buy a pretty serious used motorized chair. We can do this. Let’s get our beloved, brave friend up and running again.
