This is Sayra.

She is a mother, a friend to all, and an anchor in her community. She’s facing an impossible situation: a life threatening diagnosis in a country she no longer knows, without the medical care or support system she needs. Sayra has given so much to her family and community, and now she needs us to stand with her.

Sayra came to the United States in 1990 legally, working under a VISA, searching for safety and stability. She built a life here. She raised two sons. Despite chronic illness, she worked many jobs to support her family and her community. When she was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 for the first time, combined with her Lupus, she was no longer able to work, and was then protected under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Following surgery and treatment, she was cancer free in 2024. She did everything we ask of people who come to the U.S. seeking a better future.

Then TPS was suddenly taken away, without consideration of the life she had built or other pathways to legal residence.

In 2025, with only two months’ notice, Sayra was forced to leave the country where she built her entire adult life. She said goodbye to her sons, packed decades of memories into a suitcase, and boarded a plane to Honduras—a home she no longer recognized.

Even worse, one week before she left, she learned her cancer had returned.

In Honduras, the barriers to finding treatment were immediate and devastating. Her U.S. scans weren’t accepted. Appointments took months. And by the time she finally got answers, the cancer had grown aggressively. Now she is receiving care, but it’s inconsistent, delayed, and dangerously insufficient. The system isn’t giving her a fighting chance.
