Hi, I’m Ryle, a proud Wiradjuri man and a passionate 15-year-old vaulter from Australia. For the past four years. Vaulting isn't just as a hobby, but as a way of expressing who I am, where I come from, and the culture I proudly carry with me every day.
As an Aboriginal athlete, I often walk into spaces where my culture isn’t represented. In vaulting, I’m currently the only Indigenous competitor I my age group in New South Wales. Despite this, I’ve always believed that my heritage is my strength. Vaulting allows me to blend movement, rhythm, and trust with my horse in a way that connects deeply to my identity and the traditions of my Wiradjuri ancestors, who understood the importance of respect, balance, and connection with the land and animals.
Bringing my culture into a sport where Indigenous representation is rare is something I’m incredibly proud of. Every time I step into the arena, I’m not just competing , I’m showing that Aboriginal people belong in every space, including ones where we haven’t been seen before. It’s important for me to be a role model for other Indigenous kids, showing them that no dream is out of reach, even in sports that may feel far from our communities.
I’ve now been given the incredible opportunity to represent Australia in the International Vaulting Circuit in France. I was selected from competitors across the country, due to the talent and dedication I have brought to my performance. I was the only Indigenous athlete chosen to represent my county and culture . Currently, this sport is still growing, but it lacks cultural diversity and Indigenous representation.
Competing on the international stage is not just a personal milestone , it’s a powerful chance to inspire and encourage more of my mob and community to engage with equestrian vaulting. Getting the opportunity to competition internationally will help strengthen the indigenous culture within the sport and hopefully create pathways for others to follow. Your support will help me break new ground for Indigenous representation in vaulting, both here in Australia and around the world
