Get Ricky to Shepherd!

Anyone who knows Ricky Davis knows he has never met a stranger. He is known for his outgoingness and his ability to make new friends everywhere he goes. He loves to go and do whether it’s a weekend road trip with his wife Alice, to watch the Mustangs play ball, to help with the church youth on Wednesday nights, visiting his Daytona family or his friends from Modern Welding, or to take those 5 grandkids fishing. Ricky is a dedicated family man and friend, always visiting, and calling to check on others. He is the first to lend a helping hand and now Ricky needs your help!

On the morning of March 26, 2019 Ricky and Alice both headed for work just like any normal Tuesday. He had called Alice at 7:00 to make plans to met at the walking trail after work. At 7:30, a co-worker and good friend found Ricky on his knees in his office floor. His eyes were open but he couldn’t speak. Ricky was rushed to Deaconess Gateway Hospital where they found he had suffered a massive stroke in the left hemisphere of his brain. An MRI also found signs that Ricky had experienced a stroke weeks earlier that was misdiagnosed by doctors as carpal tunnel because it affected only his right arm and hand. A CTA also revealed Ricky’s left carotid artery was 100% blocked (causing the larger stroke) and his right carotid was 95-99% blocked. It was imperative that Ricky undergo an endarterectomy immediately to open up the right carotid before it became 100% blocked. We were told the surgery was very high risk due to him just having suffered a stroke and the amount of blood thinners he was on to keep the blood flowing through the tiny opening in the right carotid.

On March 29th Ricky underwent a successful carotid endarterectomy and his right carotid artery was cleaned and is now 100% open! However Ricky still suffers great deficits from the stroke. He has no use of his right hand, arm, and leg. His speech and language skills are dramatically impaired. It is difficult to watch someone who was so active, in an instant, become unable to walk or even recall the words needed to communicate his wants and needs. Ricky needs aggressive skilled therapy to regain as many functional skills as possible!

Ricky has been accepted to Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. Shepherd is considered to be one of the best stroke rehab facilities on this side of the country. Ricky’s treatment at Shepherd Center will be covered by insurance since Ricky has met his in-network maximum out-of-pocket while at Deaconess, however his transportation to Shepherd is not covered. We have quotes from both Flying Angels and MedWay Air Ambulance services but to use these services we must pay 100% of the costs upfront. The MedWay air ambulance will cost $10,900.

Our immediate fundraising goal is to raise the funds needed for Ricky’s air travel to Shepherd. However, this is a life changing event for Ricky and Alice and we know there will be additional expenses including  lodging and travel for Alice to be with Ricky in Atlanta, medical equipment, modifications to his home, and even paying normal bills during this time. This fund will remain open to accept any contributions towards the long road ahead. As many of you know Ricky has worked at Modern Welding over 42 years, but in his current state Ricky would not be able to perform the work functions to return to his job. His wife Alice has served as an optician for Oaktree Eye Clinic for the past 18 years, but Ricky requires around the clock care and she has not been able to return to work and will not be able to for sometime.

All funds from this account will go directly to Ricky and Alice. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated! Please help us get Ricky to Shepherd Center!
