My dog Obi loves to run. He typically can only go outside on a leash since we didn’t have a fenced in yard. We recently installed a fence, and the day it was complete, Obi got so excited that he got a case of the turbo zoomies and ripped around the yard at lightning speed, until all of a sudden—he stopped. Then, he held up his left hind leg and refused to put any weight on it. After a visit with his regular vet, X-rays, and a consultation with a veterinary orthopedic surgeon, it was determined that his Achilles tendon had detached from his heel bone and was luxating.
A luxating Achilles tendon in dogs occurs when the tendon slips out of its groove on the hock (heel), causing sudden hind limb lameness, swelling, and a "popping" sensation. Treatment typically requires surgical reconstruction of the retinaculum to keep the tendon in place, followed by strict rest and potential splinting for 2-3 months.
Between his initial vet visit, sedated X-rays, pre-surgical blood work, and a consultation with the orthopedist, I’ve already spent close to $1000 getting Obi taken care of. His surgery is estimated to be about $3500.
Please donate so Obi can zoomie again.
