Get Nathan Driving Again!

Hello! My name is Nathan Schuster. I am a 29-year-old quadriplegic attempting to gain more freedom within my life. In 2009 my family and I were involved in a serious car accident. I am grateful that the rest of my family only suffered minor injuries and were able to resume a normal life. I, however, sustained a C4/5 spinal compression that left me partially paralyzed. I have spent many years working towards becoming more independent, but I have had to drastically change my way of life because of my physical limitations. I have recently graduated college, and am looking for work within my field. I am hopeful to find one soon, but many of these jobs require me to have a valid driver’s license and a reliable mode of transportation. Because of this, I have been corresponding with the Department of Rehabilitation Services. This department is going to help me achieve my goal of driving, gaining independence, and getting myself to places like work. They have been very generous, and I am incredibly blessed that they are able to cover the cost of vehicle adaptions. These adaptions will allow me to drive a car using only my hands. I have recently started behind the wheel training, and I am getting hands on with the new driving system. It will definitely be another big adjustment for me, but I am very eager and excited to get a lot of practice and more confidence while driving again!  

Since the adaptions are going to be purchased for me, any money raised will be placed towards a down payment on a car. Once my driver’s training is completed, I will be out looking for the best car that will meet my needs. The idea of having the freedom to get behind the wheel of a car and go anywhere I please would be a game changer in my life. I am fortunate to have a family that I can depend on for almost anything, but being more independent and not relying on them to take me where I need to go, will make me feel more capable and less of a burden.
