I discovered my passion for the general well being of my community as a Peer Support counselor at B.F.A. Fairfax. I was recruited to join Peer Support as a junior at B.F.A. from the SAP counselor at the time, Paul Chapman. The goal of the Peer Support program was to have high school students properly trained and educated about social issues, drug prevention, Teen suicide prevention, and coversational skills to create a safer and more positive environment for students at B.F.A. Fairfax.
After two years as a Peer Supporter, I was offered a job to co-coordinate a similar program called Franklin County Teen Institute. We work with our sponsor Franklin County Caring Communities and the Vermont Youth Risk Behavioral Survey to create a bigger impact than just working within one school. This last year, we had students from B.F.A. Fairfax, Milton, B.F.A. St.Albans, Missisquoi Valley Union, and Enosburg Falls High School all able to attend our week-long summer training for a functioning “Teen Institute” group that will be active in each high school.
I’ve just completed my first year at the University of Hartford, currently pursuing a psychology degree. More recently I’ve been thinking that a political career would let me create the biggest amount of influence over the people and programs that I deeply care about. My hopes would be to have the opportunity later in life to create a positive impact for as many people as possibly, starting locally and potentially growing into more federal government, as an informed, accessible, and genuine politician. I believe that my ambitions are my only limit to my potential, and I’m hungry to get to work.
I come from a small household in rural Fairfax and unfortunately my family doesn’t have the level of credit to get a loan for me to complete my college education. We’ve been persistent in trying to support my school finances independently, but as a last resort we need to humbly ask friends, family, and our local community for any additional support we can have. I would be very grateful for any funds, help with a loan, or additional options that I could take advantage of in hopes to continue my education.
As a personal goal, I want to be able provide a scholarship for low income students who participate in 4-5 clubs/after school programs at B.F.A. Fairfax by the end of my life. I’m very grateful for the education I’ve already obtained, and I’d love to be able to have the means to give back to the community that has shaped who I am.
I will never be able to show my gratitude enough.
