Hi! I’m Monica, a Pipe Band Tenor Drummer.
What the Olympic games are to an athletic team, so the World Pipe Band Championships are to a pipe band and competing in Grade One at The Worlds; well, there is just no comparison for that! I have been invited to play with Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band, in Grade One, at The Worlds in Glasgow but I need your help to do it…
My Cause:
Originally from South Africa, I now live in South Australia, where I study at the University of Adelaide. When I’m not studying I play for the City of Adelaide Pipe band. I run the mid-section; writing scores, tuning drums and training my group of drummers to be the top mid-section in the State.
I volunteer at the Gracenotes Academy of Piping and Drumming as well as 413 Army Cadet Unit Pipes and Drums, where I teach youngsters how to play tenor drums, read music and general band craft. This is where I am in my element. I love learning new skills and ways to get kids interested in learning pipe band instruments and about its great culture.
While volunteering has its many rewards, money is not one of them. I make some small amounts from doing workshops here and there, but they barely cover textbook costs for University. This is where I need your help.
How will the money be spent?
The estimated total cost for this trip is $4800 dollars. Through some very generous groups I have secured $1000 already. Further donations of any amount would be greatly appreciated.
Why does this mean so much to me?
Aside from all personal rewards and sense of achievement that fulfilling this life goal would give me, it was always inspiring to see my tutors and leaders making their mark on the international stage. I would like to be THAT person for the youngsters whom I tutor and the tenors in my core. They say, “lead by example” and there is no better way to do it than this. I could not turn down this opportunity without knowing I had tried all possible options.
No amount is in too small whether it’s in Dollars, Pounds or Rands.
£10 will feed me for a day ;)
