Get Megan rolling again!

In my 27+ years as a school psychologist, my student Megan was an exception. Without going into detail, Megan’s decision to turn her life around for the better was probably the most dramatic that I’ve ever witnessed. She had been the type of teen who many people would have expected to crash and burn through poor life choices. Yet when faced with hurdles and longshot opportunities, she somehow took them on and became a high achiever in her educational endeavors, and then professionally. Megan is now a talented, highly respected Licensed Clinical Social Worker and mother to a wonderful eight-year-old son. Her story is as inspirational as any I’ve heard and I’ve encouraged her to write about it for years. And that was before January 2021, when everything changed.

 

What started as lower back pain which she attributed to the hiking she'd done the previous weekend, Megan began losing strength and functionality in her legs. She took that fateful trip to the ER which was the beginning of a wild roller coaster ride that left her with the diagnosis of Grade IV Glioblastoma of the Spinal Cord; Partial Parapalegic. This is an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer. After months of intensive treatments, Megan is back at home. An avid hiker and outdoors woman, this incurable cancer has left her bound to a wheelchair.

 

Megan is handling this newest, most daunting challenge with her characteristic positive attitude and grace. There’s a group called “Hike for Meg” on Facebook, where friends and family can post beautiful outdoor pictures from their own adventures. While she loves these posts, she should be experiencing nature up close and personal again.
