Your help will allow me to save the property my father worked to purchase for my grandmother, get back on my feet, and pursue justice.
Hi, my name is Sebastian Arana. I came to Peru to pursue a lifelong dream of studying and traveling in my father’s country before pursuing graduate school in my mother’s, but my plans have turned into a nightmare.
I am now fighting to save the property my family inherited from my father. Individuals long associated with our family, without our knowledge, filed a legal claim seeking ownership of the house. Earlier this year, just days after we discovered and joined the case, they took actions that left me unable to access the property, with almost all of my belongings inside. Because the house is under judicial review, local laws do not allow me to re-enter.
The Cost of the Crisis
I've tried to handle this on my own. It has been a painful and overwhelming experience, emotionally, physically, and financially. Because I am here in Peru, the immense costs have become my immediate responsibility, depleting my savings. I had to focus first on survival and preparing our initial legal defense which was under deadline, but I now realize I could use some help.
I now have a hernia from the loss of my asthma medication and associated stress leading to severe coughing fits, and I've been unable to address a planned dental implant. I’ve been forced to live in Airbnbs and hostels, minimizing all spending while managing this complex legal fight with minimal clothing and necessities.
My $10,000 graduate school savings are now gone, and a $5000 college loan I intended to pay off has been reduced to minimum monthly payments, incurring full interest. I also have been unable to take a planned trip back to the U.S.
What I'm Looking to Raise
I am hoping to raise up to $36,000 to cover the unavoidable costs and stabilize my life:
- Legal Defense ($15,000): Attorney fees and court costs for the complex defense and related proceedings.
- Health and Living Costs ($12,000): Temporary housing and basics until I can find stable income, and the hernia repair, dental implant, and other health needs.
- Replace Essentials ($7,000): My Windows laptop (I'm writing this on my Chromebook), medically necessary contact lenses, almost all of my clothing, important papers, and many other essential personal belongings I brought to start a new life here, which are still locked inside.
- Important Trip back to the U.S. ($2,000): A round-trip ticket and associated costs to retrieve possible key evidence, grab some of my clothes in storage, and hopefully see some of my regular doctors.
Any amount will help me face this. I have been trying to find work, but I need to get these legal and health crises under control first. Your help will allow me to save the property my father worked to purchase for my grandmother, get back on my feet, and pursue justice.
