Some of you may know or have heard of my homie Matthias Lipshitz - Matt Lipsey.
He may have taught you how to take a shirt off while doing a handstand, showed you how to play the Vuvuzela, given you some soccer pointers, maybe he told you some crazy story that’s hard to believe but actually true. Most of us know him from the trail. He’s a cool dude. A great friend.
Now some of you may have noticed he hasn't been out on the trails running lately.
The running community is family and always will be...Here is Lipseys Story -
If there’s one day that Pennsylvanians look forward to more than the first day of antlered deer season, it’s gotta be race day at Hyner View state park.
The Hyner View Trail Challenge, presented by PA Trail Dogs and PA DCNR, is as much a rite of passage as it is a coming-of-age story for trail runners in the Keystone State.
Matt Lipsey, 2x USA team member and winner of the 2016 (as well as 2018 and 2019) Hyner View Trail Challenge, is no stranger to uphill feats of strength.
Recently, Matt has been fighting a different kind of humbling uphill battle. In October of 2020, after months of unexplained diminishing strength and coordination, Matt was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP).
CIDP is a rare autoimmune disorder of the peripheral nervous system which affects about 1-8 out of every 100,000 people. In CIDP, a person’s immune system will attack itself, sending antibodies to destroy the myelin sheaths surrounding nerves. The damaged myelin sheaths prevent nerve signals from being received by the muscles of the arms and legs, resulting in difficulty walking, etc. Symptoms can vary, but conditions will worsen without treatment to the point that 1 in 3 patients will eventually require the use of a wheelchair.
THE GOOD NEWS:
If caught early enough, CIDP has a high success rate for reversal and remission! Intravenous Immunoglobulin (ivIG) is the treatment gold standard, in which new antibodies are introduced from donor sources.
MORE GOOD NEWS:
Discovered merely by accident, Matt is finding that fine nerve stimulation (such as drawing) is also assisting with his sensory and strength recovery. If anything else, CIDP has allowed Matt to re-connect with his pre-running passion as a totally new experience.
We are doing a Limited Edition Graphic T-Shirt featuring one of Lipseys drawings of Hyner View. In 2016, Run PA was born, right here at this very spot overlooking the mighty and storied West Branch of the Susquehanna. Like many of you, the Run PA brand has forged and tested itself on Humble Hill up towards the View. To commemorate (or maybe, commiserate?) we decided to put this View on a shirt.
Now, you can have the iconic looks of both Run PA and the Hyner View Trail Challenge all at once.
Proceeds from a limited run of this shirt, designed by Matt, will go towards helping him with medical expenses for treatment necessary to get his legs back on and his feet back in the dirt. Shirts are available at runpa.org
This shirt (drawings by Lipsey) will feature the RunPA Logo graphic on the front chest and the Hyner View Graphic on the back.
