Over the past year, I’ve begun my journey into the world of Dry Stone Walling.

Dry Stone Walling is one of the oldest building techniques in the world. It relies on friction, gravity, and the skill of the builder, rather than adhesives such as mortar.

In Tennessee, we have our own rich history of dry stone walls, though due to the craft being nearly forgotten in the state, most of our historic walls have fallen into disrepair and ruin.

It’s something I’ve been interested in for a while now, and I was lucky enough to find a teacher in Martin Beevers (Level 3 Waller).

Martin moved to the Nashville area from Derbyshire, England in 2020 and has made it his mission to help revive the craft in Tennessee.

In June, the two of us were chosen for the 2025 FOLKLIFE Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program, a grant initiative by the Tennessee Arts Commission.

In December, I traveled to Pennsylvania for a workshop put on by The Stone Trust, where I earned my Level 1 certificate. Now, I’ve begun training for my Level 2. Level 2 is the international standard for professional wallers and represents a significant milestone.

In August, Martin will be taking a small group of wallers to Derbyshire for 16 days to learn traditions and techniques from some of England's Master Craftsmen. Fingers crossed, I’m hoping to go and earn my Level 2 certificate.

I’ll need to raise funds to cover the travel, accommodation, workshop, and exam fees, so I’m reaching out for support. Every contribution, big or small, will help me reach this goal.
