Hi there,
My name is Liam Greenhalgh. I am a recent BCom Honours graduate from the University of Cape Town and I have just concluded my time at the UCT Ikey Tigers where I recently captained the 1st XV team in the 2021 Varsity Cup where we were runner's up.
I have been accepted to study a MSc in Sustainable Development at the University of St. Andrew's in Scotland for the 2021/2022 academic year on a rugby scholarship. This is the most incredible opportunity that I have received in my life and I am determined to take it despite the high cost of living and other expenses. I feel that the opportunities from obtaining this specific qualification from this world renowned university will be far greater than trying to find employment in Cape Town and I feel it will set me up for success in my career path and allow me to take care of my family.
With this incredible opportunity dangling in front of me, there are still a few financial barriers. As one can imagine, there are many costs that are prevalent with studying in the UK for a year which will be incredibly tough for me to pay for by myself considering that my mom cannot assist me with funding, and I have minimal savings after being a student-athlete at UCT for 6 years and doing a part-time internship for the past 16 months. Despite having a scholarship for my Masters, as it stands, I will need to pay for the following expenses before I travel and while I am there for 12 months:
Accommodation (Residence) £5,465.00 +- R104,890.00 +- €6,350.00
Travel expense £500.00 +- R10,000.00 +- €580.00
Living Costs £3,000.00 +- R60,000.00 +- €3,500.00
Student visa & Health Insurance £1,080.00 +- R21,370.00 +- €1,260.00
TB test £130.00 +- R2,500.00 +- €150.00
Total £10,175.00 +- R198,760.00 +- €11,840.00
As seen above this is still a large amount of money that I am in need of to complete this masters in Scotland. I am investigating about part time work opportunities while I am there but it is rather limited due to the restrictions of work hours with the student visa and unpredictable nature of Covid outbreaks. The St Andrew's rugby club said that they will help me find part time work at the local gym which could potentially cover my food expenses every month, but it is not guaranteed.
