THIS is Alexis.
Lexi is 11 years old and in desperate need of an electric wheelchair / powered chair for her to be able to attend her preferred mainstream secondary school in September (taster week in july).
Lexi has many medical issues including type 1 diabetes, bowel incontinence, scoliosis and marfan syndrome.
Marfan syndrome means lexi is very tall skeletal features with severe hypermobility and long narrow flat feet which have rolled inwards due to the hypermobility meaning she walks on the inside of her feet/ankle bone with her legs still straight. Lexi's leg muscles are very weak so she tires easily and can't walk very far with her knees buckling regularly and being unstable causes alot of trips and falls.
Lexi at this time has a self propelling wheelchair on which she relies an adult to push her as she also doesn't have the arm muscles to propell herself and is restricted more in movement when wearing her body brace for the scoliosis, the nhs has stated that she does not fit the criteria to get one through them and doesn't get much through disability benefits (I had to fight for what she does get) and that goes on incontinence pads (not free as don't have a diagnosis for that yet)and the many train journeys to great ormond street hospital and kings college hospital for all of her appointments, needless to say she has been let down by the system.
Not only will this electric wheelchair give lexi the opportunity to get the education she has a right to, it will give her that bit of independence that any young girl should have like going to the shop with her older sister, she needs alot of other care which for an 11 year old she is aware is getting embarrassing. This will give her a new lease of life and the school are happy to take her on with everything else just need the chair to get around the school and grounds.
Any amount donated will be greatly appreciated and any amount left over after chair, spare batteries ect is purchased will be donated to great ormond street hospital and all that they do.
Thankyou.
