Get Katie to JSHeroes 2019!
Hello! First of all, I super appreciate you even coming to this page to check out my story and why I am fundraising in the first place. I just got word that I received a scholarship ticket to JSHeroes, a conference that I never thought I would have the opportunity to attend. The only thing that travel and accommodations are expensive, and I need help.
If you're here you probably know about my involvement in the tech industry, and how breaking into it hasn't been short of its challenges. I have tried to make positive waves in the Portland tech scene by starting a meetup called Portland Future Leaders in Tech, which is a group that helps technical newbies break into the tech world. While I am one of the founders of this group, it has been even hard for me to get my foot in through the door. Despite all my setbacks, I try to put out a positive message for those who are also underrepresented minorities in tech to NOT give up. I want to see everyone succeed in this industry, and that is my driving force behind getting my foot in. I want to get in, so that I can gain experience and (in the future) mentor those who are in the position I find myself in now.
One step I am taking to gain more knowledge and experience (because the feedback is ALWAYS that I just need more experience) is by attending conferences when I can. I attended Write/Speak/Code last year in NYC on my own dime, and it changed my life. JSHeroes would be my second conference I attend (if I can get there). The reason I ask for assistance is because I haven't had a full-time job for...let's just say, a really long time. I have done internships and apprenticeships, but between paying for life expenses and rent...I just don't have much left to pay for airfare and a place to rest in Romania. I am only requesting help for an Airbnb (about $200) from April 10-April 13, and a plane ticket (about $1700 but prices may increase)...I can cover food and the rest of the expenses. I need to reply back to the organizers of JSHeroes by this Sunday, March 17, 2019, if I can attend or not. Thank you for reading this far, I really just appreciate you.
Also, if you end up donating, please send me a DM on Twitter (@KatieofCode), or an email ([email redacted]) with an address I could send a personal thank you note to. Thank you!
