Here is Indie's story, in Jennifer's words:

During my travels through Goa, India I came across four sweet puppies wriggling around in a garbage dump on a side road - no mom in sight. They were flea bitten, hungry, thirsty and overheated. Seeing the puppies broke my heart and for the next few days my friends and I returned to the garbage dump to check in on them and give them fresh water and food. When we returned on the third day, there was only one puppy (who later would be known as “Indie) left. When we approached the garbage dump we saw her running from a large dog - we then witnessed a man pick her up, and he was about to throw her in a nearby field - until we intervened. After searching around it was clear her brothers and sisters were gone. She was the runt of the litter and she might not have been able to keep up with her brother and sisters, or someone might have found the puppies and decided to leave Indie behind because she wasn’t as “healthy”. At this point I knew she wouldn’t last a day on her own so I took her with me with the intention of nursing her back to health and taking her to an animal shelter to be adopted. I spent days calling and visiting animal shelters and animal rescue organizations but they were all full. I was also told she could easily die in a shelter because there were countless puppies waiting for adoption and lots of circulating diseases. Because of the care and love I’ve given Indie a vet and rescue worker advised me Indie was now too domesticated to become a “street dog” in India. This information made my stomach drop and I knew I couldn’t leave her… so I decided to stick with what I started and continue to work to find her a home. After careful consideration I have decided to take Indie home and deliver her to a family waiting to adopt her and take her on long hikes, beach walks, and puppy play dates.  I want to take Indie with me as “excess baggage” instead of sending her as “unaccompanied cargo” - an option that is more expensive, more traumatizing, and less safe for pups.

Indie is currently 9 weeks old, gaining weight, learning how to use her voice and looking very healthy and happy. She is playful, cuddly and very affectionate.  She loves the beach and enjoys toying with cats and rough housing with dog’s 6 times her size. She is very people oriented and wins the hearts of everyone she encounters.

The road ahead for Indie is uncertain but with a little help from a lot of people it is very possible to get her to a safe home in Canada. I got involved thinking I could help a lost sick pup and get her settled in India – I can’t just abandon her now and I need your help. This little girl deserves a happy home where she can grow up enjoying life as a dog and feel both safe and loved. I am estimating the cost to transport her to Canada and cover her medical bills and proper documentation to be roughly $2,200. Any of the funds raised that are not needed will be donated to the volunteer organization mentioned at the end of this post - they are in desperate need of donations for food during Monsoon season when tourists leave and the dogs in the town starve. It would mean everything to me if you would contribute to getting Indie to Canada - any amount will make a difference. Many hands make light work. I will keep you updated on Indie’s progress and travel plans so you can be involved in her journey to Canada. Thank you so much for being part of this. Your big hearts and generosity is the only thing that will make this possible.

I can’t save them all and saving her won’t fix the problem but I do believe we need to be the change we wish to see and do small things with great love. This won’t change the world but Indie’s entire world will change if she makes it to Canada. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank you in advance for helping Indie make it to her new home to Halifax.
