My names Tristan Inglis-Comeau and this is a story I'm wanting to share. It feels weird asking for money, but I realized the money's not for only for me so I think it's worth a shot. My grandfather, Paul Comeau, bought a 1966 Corvette Stingray off the lot, being his pride and joy, driving it until he passed. Since the day I was born he decided it would be the only thing he'd leave me. For years we had tried to get me to drive it, but it either didn't run or I was too young to drive. My grandfather passed in November of 2019 and since then I've been in possession of his car, shuffling it all around the boonies of Hectanooga in family members barns and garages as I never had the means or capacity of owning such a classic. Eventually my dad was able to store it in a sea-can, where it has been sitting for some years now. The idea of creating this story into a movie has been something my friends and I have all wanted to attempt, being 6 years in the making. Since day one, my friends and I always toyed at the idea of driving from coast to coast in this classic car. People would call us crazy, they would say it couldn't be done, others thinking it would be a bad idea or ruin the car. My grandfather was a simple man, he loved cars, coca-cola, cigarettes, cuba, cards with his friends and his family. Growing up in Whitehorse and him being in Nova Scotia meant limited time together, seeing him at best for 1 week a year when I was younger, eventually having other priorities as I got older. Driving his car is my way of preserving those memories of him as I know he'll be looking down with his smile on his face I so visibly remember when he'd take me for a cruise down the small roads of Hectanooga. I've been lucky enough and in some ways cursed with same love of cars through him and my dad, slowly accumulating some mechanical skills and knowledge of how they work. Having an empty wallet at times with the never ending project cars/trucks. While never having the full confidence as a hobbyist for such a journey. That is until I reconnected with some of my previous "breaking" students Gebz and Von. Both of these young men had a similar affinity towards motorsport and wrenching, just being at a much higher calibre than me. Gebz apprenticing as a mechanic at Klondike Chev, driving and building his own classic C10 Truck and Plymouth Valiant, Von wanting to start his own shop one day working out of his dad's, helping all of his buddies like me, out of the love and passion, driving and building his own classic Volvos. It was only recently that I learned about their own projects and dreams that I felt they aligned with mine: drive and build old cars and trucks that were functional and fun, with the means you had. Not striving for perfection, just going with the flow and figuring it out. I told them my story and they were instantly onboard and invested. This is where it aligned even further and started to become a reality, Von had a friend who grew up in the Yukon who now lived in Nova Scotia becoming a mechanic: Fisher Prusula. Who by chance, lived 12 mins away from where the Corvette was being stored and forgotten. It felt unreal. I called Fisher and after telling him my story he was instantly invested as well, saying he'd do whatever he could to help, working on his own time to get it out of storage, inspected and ready for the road. Taking on all the parts sourcing and planning for work to be done. Offering us a place to stay while down there too. Fisher then connected me to Dustin's Auto to get it appraised for insurance and the same energy was had, I called Dustin and he was keen to help, driving all the way from Yarmouth to Fisher's house to appraise the vehicle. I then decided I needed a truck and car hauler just in case to not overwork the corvette, being better than tow-companies and for when we had to drive through big days of boring scenery. We were also silly enough to think that three potentially 4 grown men would fit into a 66 Corvette... I bought a used Sierra half-ton truck for cheap from a young man Evan Telford who was helpful in getting it from Antigonish to Halifax at my grandma's house. I called GM Canada headquarters telling them my story and movie proposal and they were quick to support us with letters for two free oil changes from any Chevrolet Dealership. From there I felt like I needed to get more support. I reached out to all my videographer buddies: Douglas Joe, Riley Simpson-Fowler and Karl "Grey Skies", all of them being super supportive offering their cameras. Karl eventually decided he'd just hop onboard of the trip and make the project that much more of a reality. From there it was all logistics, getting the car ready with Fisher, me booking flights for the team on May 4th in honour of this Star Wars of a mission. Getting the car hauler and truck to my Grandma's and paid for, registered and insured, planning the route with Kyra, aiming to take all the scenic routes avoiding any big city chaos and camping or bed and breakfasting mom and pa style. While asking for more support locally, which is what inspired this gofundme. I'm asking for funds, because a group of 4 of us are taking time away from work for two weeks or more, losing out on income, with the likely hood of accumulating lots of expenses on the trip. The funds will go towards getting Gebz and Von tools for the road and also their careers, covering any personal expenses related to accommodation/per diem, paying Fisher for his time, paying Karl for his time and any personal expenses related to accommodation/per diem and for his production of the movie we want to present to indie-film festivals. If there is enough to cover what is fair for all on the team helping me out then I'd use some funds to help myself with loss of income as well during the time of the movie and pay for the time spent planning, organizing and orchestrating all the moving parts of this project and the future plans of applying to festivals, etc. The funds will also act as a safety net for when we run into problems on the road so that we can get ourselves out of trouble and any surprise expenses. It feels weird asking for money, but anytime I share this story with someone they seem to think it has something worth sharing to the world. Whether it be the experience of loss of a family member, the love of the road trip and cars, or how community has a way of coming together to help make something special. I hope you'll consider supporting our project, while no pressure. Any amount is greatly appreciated. WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR THIS TRIP!!!
