Get Gabe Rolling 2: Electric Boogaloo
For those who may not know, I'm Gabe, a multiply disabled writer and activist. It's the end of Disability Pride Month and the beginning of my birthday month, and I've realized that what I want most is help to get some of my freedom and independence back. I have a manual wheelchair that has served me very well as I've transitioned to life as a full-time wheelchair user, but after nearly five years of continuous use it has begun to break down, and the progression of my disabilities has made it harder to get around due to increased fatigue, tics/tremors, and instability in my arms. I'm waiting for a wheelchair assessment but the process can take a long time and Medicaid typically won't cover the type of chair I need for outdoor trips: a portable electric wheelchair (like this one - I also need the optional headrest due to neck instability: https://www.foldandgowheelchairs.com/travel-friendly/magnesium-electric-wheelchair-turquoise/) that can fold and be brought inside our not-too-accessible apartment. Any amount helps, and anything we receive beyond the cost of the chair would be used to help make our living space safer for two disabled occupants and to start saving toward finally moving to an accessible space. Thank you for reading, donating, and sharing! It would mean the world to me to start a new year with better access to the world.
