Help get Chuck back in the classroom!

Charles “Chuck” Garrettson is a devoted professor and mentor to his students at George Mason University. He suffered a significant stroke on October 11th that left him without the ability to use his right side or speak. Early on his doctors predicted a good recovery - full or close to it - and Chuck continues to make progress each day. He is now able to walk over 100 feet and speak in short sentences. As usual, his trademark optimism and resilience has shone through and he is cheerfully attacking his daily therapy sessions with vigor.

 

His medical bills are beginning to mount and while insurance has paid his rehabilitation thus far, they have recently denied his claims for short term rehab at a skilled nursing facility. As his home is not safe for him (stairs, narrow door frames and bathrooms), we have had to move him to another facility and cover his expenses and care ourselves. The medical director at his last facility strongly believes a skilled nursing facility is the best place for him to continue his progress, and would likely require a stay of 60-80 days.

 

We, his family, are planning to support him financially as best we can (he will cease to receive paychecks at the end of this month), but we cannot cover it all on our own and are counting on the generous support of his friends to help contribute funds that will be used for medical bills and day-to-day expenses like rent and utilities.

 

All funds raised will be used directly in support of Chuck, with the express goal of helping him make a full recovery so he can get back to what he does best - teaching.
