Get Amruddin’s Family Safely Out of Afghanistan
Before we had Mira and Arren, we had Amruddin, an exchange student from Afghanistan. He was a bright, inquisitive, outgoing teenager, and we were happy to welcome him into our family. Fearing for his safety, he chose to flee to Canada rather than return home after his stay with us. The decision to leave his family could not have been easy for him, but in hindsight it was the right decision, given the stories that he was hearing from home.
That was more than 11 years ago. Siblings have grown up, and in one case has kids of his own. His youngest brother just graduated high school, and his sister is in her last year of university, studying English. Others are also in school, studying education, agriculture, and finance.
(What is Amruddin’s niece Sophia’s future going to be under the Taliban?)
But with the US withdrawing their troops, the Taliban is once again on the rise, ushering in a potentially bleak future for these beautiful children and their family. The Taliban have not yet taken over the city that Amruddin’s family lives in, but they have it surrounded, and have already started cutting off some means of communication. That’s why it’s urgent that Amruddin get his family out as soon as possible, before the country is completely locked down.
He has a plan: get them into neighboring Tajikistan, and from there to Canada (a long process, but a lot easier from Tajikistan than from Afghanistan). All he needs is some money to finance the operation. He’s done the research, and $15,000 should be enough to bring his parents, 5 siblings, an in-law, and a niece and nephew out. After that, it’s just a lot planning, patience, and hope.
Please help if you can. Any amount is appreciated. With your help, we can save an entire extended family of 10 from a life of oppression, and eventually reunite them with Amruddin.
