Get Alvin a Laser!

Alvin is a 15-year-old young man from an island in The Bahamas.

He has a very inspiring story and he is incredibly talented!

Coming out of the at the Optimist, he needs our help to get a laser so he can continue his sailing career!

 

Nacho Varisco met him while volunteering with Make 'Them Sailors' in the Exuma Sailing Club, in the Bahamas.

 

"Last week I met the 

most talented kid I have ever had the chance to train.

 

He lives in Exuma, a six th

ousand inhabitants island from The Bahamas, and trains in the @exumasailingclub.

 

He only started to sail at the age of 13, he is now 1,90 m tall and he lives far from any competitive sailing environment…none of that stopped him from being an extremely good sailor! It was a pleasure for me to be able to train him during the last 2 weeks and while we got to know each other a bit better he told me his sad and beautiful story.

 

He started sailing three years ago because he had a friend, a fanatic Optimist sailor, who participated in the local Sloop (a traditional Bahamian Boat) regatta where he got hit by the head and thrown to the water by a broken crane that was launching the boat on the water. He got stuck underwater, nobody was fast enough to save him and he drew. Continuing with what his friend loved to do was the reason why he started sailing.

He also told me that he felt very sad with the result he got in the Bahamian Optimist National last year in Exumas (his first championship), “I was beaten so badly in my own harbour”. So when the corona quarantine started only a few days after the Nationals, he decided to bring his boat home and for three months he trained every day by himself, using videos he found on the internet to help him improve.

 

Now he is 15, a very skillful optimist sailor but about to finish his Opti career he wants to start sailing on a laser! He is working for his father to save money to hopefully one day be able to buy a laser while he is still training to get better in his optimist.
