Everything happened so suddenly.
After losing our father in 2017, we were slowly but steadily attempting to rebuild our lives. Unfortunately, our family has now been hit by another tragedy.
In March of 2022, we noticed that our Mother, Gertrude Lampkin was suffering from irregular breathing and a fast heart rate. Out of concern for her well-being, we decided to take her to the emergency room. After numerous tests were run at the hospital, we knew that something was wrong.
Upon release, she was referred to a series of specialists in order to pinpoint the main issue. After months of doctors appointments and follow-up appointments trying to figure out the appropriate course of action for our mother’s care, on May 6 at her follow-up, we were given the heart-wrenching news that our options were few. Our mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
Chemotherapy wasn’t an option, as we have been doing iron infusion treatments with her to combat her anemia. We were then given the devastating news that our mother had anywhere between 1-2 months to 1-2 years to live.
On May 10th, our Mother began complaining of headaches. We took her to Brookdale Hospital, where CT scans revealed that she had an inoperable tumor pressing against her brain. She remained in the hospital until the 17th, where she was then sent home to hospice care, where our main concern became ensuring that she was as comfortable as possible and surrounded by love.
On Friday, May 27th, our Mother went into septic shock with a fever of 103.7 degrees and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital. By Saturday evening, our Mother was surrounded by friends and family, and took her final breath as everyone sang and prayed. She said goodbye to all the pain, goodbye to the suffering, but most of all, goodbye to us.
Our Mother was and is our world.
She is the mother who carried us into this world but also the one who carried us through some of the hardest times of our life. Although her battle was short she fought valiantly to the very end.
After losing our father in 2017 our mother took on the unimaginable task of caring for us emotionally while she also mourned the loss of her dear husband Keith. She was thrust into being the main provider in our family.
Our Mother was a God-fearing, caring woman who put the needs of others before herself a lot of the time.
My sister Kayanna and I are now left to pick up the pieces of our family, and it has been challenging. We are requesting any financial assistance that can be spared at this time.
Donated funds will help with the funeral service and hospital bills. We ask that you find it in your heart to give whatever you can, as my sister and I attempt to power through this unimaginable loss.
