He's one in a million, and unfortunately, in more ways than one!
Dear friends, family, work colleagues, business associates and you, the one taking the time to read this.
With heavy hearts and a welling sense of hope, we share Gerry Alleaume's story—a true superhero to so many whose kindness and selflessness have been a beacon in our lives. Gerry, with his boundless compassion, sincere interest in other people, a heart of gold and an ability to solve the most complex issues and fix just about anything, now faces an unprecedented challenge that has shaken us to our core.
Gerry's Personal Story
Imagine a man whose generosity has no boundaries and whose talents have touched and assisted many lives. This is Gerry—a genuine and humble soul now navigating the storm of an extremely rare terminal cancer – appendiceal cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonea (PMP).
Diagnosed with this relentless adversary, Gerry stands at the crossroads of hope and despair. In the face of this aggressive enemy, he fights not just for himself but for more time to witness his children, 12-year-old Ethan and 8-year-old Alex, grow. He longs for more moments to create lasting memories with his family, a desire that has taken on an urgency that words struggle to convey.
The Uphill Battle
Diagnosed in March 2023 and told he was inoperable at that point, Gerry endured six months of aggressive chemotherapy – one of the strongest concoctions every two weeks. The goal is to shrink the disease to be able to have the "mother of all surgeries", as it is known, CRS and HIPEC peritonectomy. After 12 rounds of gruelling chemo the 12+ hour surgery took place on 27 November 2023, resulting in being deemed "unsuccessful" with the disease being so widespread that whilst some was removable, a great deal could not be removed, including the primary source - the appendix, resulting in a terminal prognosis which has been considered to be less than 12 months.
Since then, Gerry has been steadily recovering from the surgery, gaining half back of the 13 kilograms lost and trying to navigate and process the extremely uncertain road ahead. Gerry's family is now looking at what treatment options are available to buy more time and to slow the high-grade aggressive disease down. Chemotherapy has just commenced again, and Gerry has just been accepted to have a fairly new treatment administered, which is not available as yet in Perth and has only been in Sydney for five years. The treatment is PIPAC and will require Gerry to travel to Sydney every 6-8 weeks for three nights. Another surgery may be possible, again by a surgeon in Sydney, in a few months. However, this could result in a reduction in quality of life outcomes and would mean a two-month stay in a Sydney hospital.
The road ahead is laden with difficulty and uncertainty - medical bills, mortgage, everyday expenses, treatments, and an impending second surgery cast a shadow over Gerry and his family. Additionally, multiple trips to Sydney for specialized treatment loom in the coming months. We believe our community can be a source of profound difference in these challenging times.
This GoFundMe campaign is a plea to raise funds for a pivotal treatment not yet available in Perth and possible surgery that could extend Gerry's life. Beyond medical expenses, your contributions will alleviate the considerable financial strain on the family, ensuring Gerry has the best care during his multiple trips to Sydney.
No stranger to adversity throughout his life - Gerry navigated it in his childhood, teenage years, in his business, which he built from nothing and lost - and yet he always has sought to make the best of any situation he has faced and helped anyone in need along the way that he could … but this test, no one can prepare for its arrival and it infiltrates every aspect of your life, never to be the same again.
Your Impact
Your role in this journey transcends that of a mere donor; you become a vital part of Gerry's journey through this adversity. Your generosity supports the necessary medical interventions and provides stability, allowing the family to focus on the moments that truly matter—their precious time together, to be cut shorter than ever anticipated.
Why Your Support Matters
Cancer is not just a medical battle; it is a test of emotional, mental and financial strength. Your support seeks to lift a portion of that burden off Gerry and his family, offering hope and resilience in the face of the vast unknown.
How Your Contributions Will Be Utilized
Crucial Surgery Costs - Funds will be directed to cover expenses associated with the additional surgery, which would mean up to two months in Sydney —a turning point in Gerry's fight against cancer.
Specialized Treatment in Sydney - Your contributions will ensure Gerry has access to the best care during multiple trips to Sydney for specialized treatments. Every six weeks, there is the opportunity to have a new treatment of PIPAC, where chemotherapy is sprayed into the abdominal cavity to land topically on the disease. This treatment is given alongside systemic chemotherapy, which Gerry is enduring every fortnight currently.
Medical Expenses - From chemotherapy to post-surgery treatments and alternative therapies, your support ensures Gerry receives comprehensive care.
Financial Help for Cost of Living - Beyond medical costs, your generosity provides financial relief for the family, helping with the cost of living pressures during these challenging times.
