Dogs Hope German Shepherd Rescue adopted out a beautiful female German Shepherd. . . Story & Update below:
Raven was adopted on March 28th, little did any of us know she was pregnant at the time of her adoption. About a month later (just before her spay date) her new "dad" started noticing some changes to her body and felt it best to take her to the vet where she was diagnosed with getting ready to have puppies in about 2 weeks. Her new family immediately started preparing for the birth and care of the puppies. Purchases were made for their births and their safety all paid for out of her adopter's pockets. Thank goodness they reacted quickly because May 5th just 5 days later she gave birth to 7 little darlings. Yet with all of their preparation two of the puppies had to be rushed to MedVet in Columbus, which was a VERY, VERY, VERY hefty cost that the new adopters paid for.
As it turns out all 7 puppies have umbilical hernias, Here's what Raven's vet had to say: The puppies conditions are due to a lack of nutrition during the first 30 days of Raven's pregnancy (while she was still in her original owner's home).
When she arrived at her new family’s home she was in bad shape, she was 15 to 20 lbs. underweight. As new fur parents, they wanted to get their new girl to a healthy weight, not knowing she was pregnant and thankfully they did. If they hadn't gotten her when they did and if they hadn't been as vigilant as they were Raven may not have made it nor would the pups have made it.
The family that adopted Raven has taken on expenses no one expected with the birth of 7 puppies. Not only that but there are now 7 surgeries in their futures this is all well beyond all of our means and we need help.
UPDATE: As of 6/6/2023 the seven pups have herniated umbilical issues, which are common in puppies but unfortunately with these pups the abdominal wall is not closing quick enough and the fear of intestinal strangulation is of great concern, vet says surgery is required now.
UPDATE: 6/20/2023 Little Violet was rushed to the ER her herniated umbilical ruptured, the other pups are going to their surgeon on Wednesday, 6/21/2023.
UPDATE: 6/21/2023 "The foster dad writes: Friends and adopters. One of the pup's hernia ruptured last night, we rushed her to MedVet where they stabilized her and gave her pain meds to calm her. We transferred her this a.m. from Medvet because wanted $6000 for surgery after we gave them $1200 for the overnight stay and the pain meds. The other pups were scheduled to have surgery tomorrow but the surgeon moved a day ahead to get all pups done, she’s coming in on her day off to do this. Please keep all of the babies in your prayers."
Little Violet had her surgery, the surgeon came in on her day off to perform surgery on ALL the pups. As it turns out Little Violet didn't do well under anesthesia but she came through like a champ. Her brother Chance was the 2nd in line and he did even worse under anesthesia, they did a temporary fix on Chance's umbilical hernia.
Before another pup could go under the knife all were examined as to why Violet and Chance did not do well only to learn every one of the babies has a herniated diaphragm. Which is making any surgery right now at their tender ages extremely risky. It is hoped that as they mature they will outgrow the diaphragm hernias.
UPDATE: 7/13/2023 the last 5 pups had their surgeries and all fared well. All the pups are doing well.
From the day the pups were born on May 5th to now, between the Emergency MedVet visits and the 7 surgeries the new adopters have spent money they didn’t really have.
Please we are begging for your help and if donating isn't possible, please share this plea.
We all thank you!
