Geri's Angels

To say that 2020 has been a difficult year would be the understatement of the century and for so many, it’s a year that won’t soon fade from memory.  For our family, it has been one tragedy after another and while we remain stronger than ever as a family unit, we’ve found ourselves in a situation no one wants to be in.

Just as Covid-19 began wreaking havoc on the world, our wonderful mother Geri was diagnosed with end of life liver failure.  Thankfully, she was accepted into the St. Luke’s transplant program but by mid-June, Geri was forced back into the hospital due to a terrible respiratory infection that resulted in her being placed on a ventilator.  What transpired over the next four months is something we wouldn’t wish on anyone and it absolutely brought all of us to our knees.  There were multiple times when the doctors didn’t think she would make it through the day and due to the surging pandemic, most of these conversations were done by phone as we were not able to be at her bedside.  More than once we were forced to discuss the option of turning off her life support but in our heart of hearts, we knew her strength would pull her through.  In mid-October, our mother was finally released from the hospital and reactivated on the transplant list but shortly after Thanksgiving, she was hospitalized again for another infection.  At the time of writing this, she is still in the hospital but like she has done so many times this year, she has found the strength to overcome the infection and will hopefully be released soon.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean her fight is over as she will most certainly have a long journey towards the end goal of receiving a liver transplant.

On top of this long and painful health battle, we have also been forced to all but close down our cherished family catering business Affairs to Remember.  The business, started by Geri and her mother Dorothy, has served Brazoria County since 1996 and over the years, she has taken great pride in creating beautiful events and meals for the community.  Even in her most critical moments over the last year, Geri could still recount the details of any particular wedding right down to the bride’s name and the colors she chose for her big day.  Watching her eyes light up as she recounts the countless events she put her heart and soul into over the years has been both painful and beautiful to witness.  This business was not one of the proudest accomplishments of Geri’s life, it was also the main source of income and the loss of it has put our family’s finances in a critical position.  As our mother Geri fights for her life from a hospital bed, our dad Harold continues to hold everything together at home but as many can relate to, the struggle gets more difficult every day.

As we continue doing everything we can to help our mother beat this terrible illness, we’re asking anyone who is financially able to contribute to our GoFundMe.  These donations will go towards covering out of pocket medical expenses along with helping cover the loss of income our parents are currently experiencing.  We understand this is a difficult time for so many but any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated.  Thank you for fighting with us as one of #GerisAngels!
