Gerald is a much loved husband, father of 3 and grandfather of 10. He has a rare disorder called Aplastic Anaemia. For the best chance of recovery from Aplastic Anaemia, the patient requires a fresh marrow transplant.
After 12 months of trial treatments and searching for a 100% matching bone marrow donor, only one person in 20+ million people was found in Finland but because A.A. responds best to fresh marrow and the difficulties of Covid19 travel restrictions, has ruled this person out, which is why Australians are preferred to overseas donors.
This leaves Gerald with the last hope of using a haploid (50% matching related) donor, his son. He is now preparing for a bone marrow transplant in February 2022, with his son as a donor who is travelling back to Australia for the transplant. Gerald requires 3 months off work if all goes well and our son 5+ weeks as the donor.
The transplant process is a real health marathon with lots of unknowns. Gerald is a strong fighter and I know he will make it through this. We have started this go fund me page to help relieve some financial pressure off the family and to help cover what isn’t paid for through the health/government systems.
