I genuinely never thought I would be setting up a GoFundMe for myself.
But after sharing what’s been happening with my fertility, so many of you messaged me saying the same thing: “Please let us help.”
So, as uncomfortable as I feel asking for help, I’m trying to listen.
Six years ago, cancer treatment saved my life — but it also left me with a 99.9% chance of being infertile after aggressive chemo & a stem cell transplant.
For years, I’ve lived with the assumption that having my own biological child simply wasn’t going to be an option for me as I didn’t get the option to save my eggs before treatment with my stage 4 cancer being too progressed. I grieved it, I tried to accept it, and I built a life around that reality.
Then recently, I found out that somehow, against all the odds, I still have a tiny chance.
My ovarian reserve is incredibly low, and there are absolutely no guarantees. I don’t know how many eggs — if any — we will be able to retrieve. But I’ve been given an opportunity to try to freeze my eggs, and I can’t walk away from that chance without trying.
The treatment I’ve been quoted for costs £17,000.
It is an enormous amount of money, particularly for something that may not work. And that’s honestly what I’ve been struggling with most: how do you put a price on the possibility of one day having a child? And how do you walk away from it knowing this might be your only chance?
I wasn’t planning to crowdfund this… in all honestly I didn’t know how I’d come up with such a sum so thank you to you all who suggested it. Naturally I don’t ever assume to have support with it all but I’m swallowing my pride and letting people help.
Please, please don’t feel any pressure to donate. I know how expensive life is and I would never expect anyone to give me their money. But if you’ve followed my story over the years and you would like to put a few pounds towards giving me this chance, I can’t really put into words what that would mean to me.
And if you can’t donate, sharing this is more than enough!
I’ve spent so much of the last few years learning that surviving isn’t the same as living. Sometimes living means being brave enough to go after the things you desperately want, even when you’re terrified of the outcome.
So this is me taking the chance.
Whatever happens, at least I’ll know I tried.
Thank you for being here.
