Georgia Big Day: PKP Restoration Initiative

We're back at it! On April 27th, 2024, Josiah Lavender, John Patten Moss, and Patrick Maurice will strike out on a mind-numbing, white-knuckled, 24-hour journey across Georgia's birdiest habitats. We're in search of the elusive 200-species birding Big Day. This effort marks our fifth attempt at achieving the tantalizing Big Day total of 200 species. For years we have experimented with and refined our route, and we hope that 2024 is the magic year. Our Zugun-crew will leave it all on the field as we seek to best the Georgia Big Day record of 196 bird species in 24 hours, a record that was set by our team in 2021.

Our effort will bring much needed attention and life-giving funds to Pendleton King Park's now year-old restoration initiative. Last year's fundraising ($4700) kickstarted this project to eradicate invasive plants in Pendleton King Park in Augusta, GA and has provided a stunning year's worth of progress. The funds from this year's effort will continue habitat restoration at this 64-acre bird sanctuary by supplying funds that furnish the project with materials and supplies to continue our important work.

Pendleton King Park will prove a critical stop on our journey from Athens to the Georgia Coast. Last year's visit during the Big Day proved its worth by providing three massive unique pickups: Veery, Worm-eating Warbler, and Chestnut-sided Warbler.
