The Story
Georgette is a portrait docufiction created by best friends in Berlin. It tells the the story of George, a black man living in Berlin who grew up in two contrasting worlds. Half of his childhood was spent running the streets of the Bay Area, where trouble wasn’t hard to find, and the other half in a more stable, but still dysfunctional home environment with his Mom and brothers in Alameda where words of wisdom and tough love couldn’t prevent him from avoiding the danger that lurked in the inner-city social scene of the 90s
Faced with years of hardship, and living in survival mode, George didn’t always have a healthy way to channel his fiery emotions. As an adult, George has defined his joy through the expressive alter-ego, Georgette. With make-up, wigs and striking outfits, Georgette expresses a side of George he couldn’t allow in the US. The film takes viewers along on his transformation, revealing the intimate details of what it means to live authentically, joyfully and full of love.
The docufiction highlights the spaces where Georgette shines: sex-positive parties, where judgment is left at the door and people can be unapologetically themselves. These parties allow George to fully step into Georgette’s skin and experience a freedom he never thought possible . But, outside of these safe spaces, George faces the reality of living in a world that doesn’t always understand or accept his choice to harness the power of both masculinity and femininity.
The film captures the tension between these two sides of George’s life—one shaped by a troubled upbringing in a scene where desperation to fit in led to losing himself in the party scene and the other shaped by his desire to be Georgette, a character he’s defined for himself to experience the joy of authenticity
Ultimately, this film is a celebration of authenticity and the courage to tap into who we want to be . It’s a powerful look at how the freedom to express yourself can transform your life, no matter where you come from.
