George's Specialised Wheelchair

Donation protected
My name is George, I'm 21 and an above knee amputee studying Biomedical Science at the University of Birmingham. Some of you will know my story, but for those who are not aware, I was diagnosed in February 2018 with a recurrence of the Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) that I was diagnosed and treated for in 2006. My leg became weak and the femur fractured in April 2018. During the time spent unable to move in hospital, I was provided with a basic NHS wheelchair that supported my leg in plaster cast. Following months of chemotherapy, the best option for me to survive was to have my leg amputated in July 2018. Since then I have been using that same NHS wheelchair which is no longer suited to my needs. It is very heavy and difficult to propel manually, I often must have someone else pushing which is frustrating for me as I wish to be an independent young person. Currently I must have someone with me (usually my parents) to get it in and out of the car and put it together, and it does not fit into the car easily. I would like to be able to have a wheelchair that is light and compact enough for me to move about easily in it, but also get in and out of a car independently. This would allow me to visit my friends at university and be as much of a ‘normal’ 21-year-old as possible. I hope to return to University to finish my degree, having taken a leave of absence on medical grounds. A new chair would allow me to get around the University and the city with ease and independence. In addition, I have found that using the wheelchair to get to the bathroom/shower is easier and safer for me than crutches. Therefore, a smaller wheelchair would allow me to access bathrooms that are less roomy and still be able to transfer safely. I have been provided with a prosthetic leg that I hope to be able to use more, however I have noticed that walking using it is very tiresome and I must revert to the wheelchair to continue my day. This means that whilst I really hope to be walking a lot, on my worst days I will require the chair to be able to get around. My fundraising total is based on quotes from a mobility dealership. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity in helping me achieve my independence. Thank you for taking the time to visit my page, George Paxford
