Our names are Maxi Best, Karren Akwei, and Yunique Veale (not pictured), and we are freshmen at North Star College Prep High School. We have found debate to be liberating this year! We have learned in our class about structures of power and race and how they influence our lives in Newark. We have also learned how we can become active and critical participants in our society. Debate gives us an avenue for finding our own voice in a society and culture that often tries to silence us. The information and skills we learn in debate allow us to become more active members of our community in Newark. It is crucial for training us how to lead our peers.
Debate has become a burning passion for us, it's more than just a class, its more than just a sport, it makes high school enjoyable. It has expanded our horizons, and helped us to connect with many people we otherwise wouldn't get a chance to meet. We look forward to continuing to pursue it as scholars and activists in Newark.
We want to go to debate camp this Summer, and we have a partial scholarship from our school and from the George Mason Debate Institute. However, we need to raise support to finish covering the cost of tuition. We already have raised $2650 in support from our school and the camp, so we are well on our way, but we need help from family and friends to reach the finish line. We need to raise $1000 per person, and we have already received a matching offer of $500 per student. This means that for a two week camp, we only need to raise $500 more per person, or $1,500 total.
