George at home

Over the last month my dad, George Snipes has had pneumonia, and been septic from Covid. He was first admitted on 7/6 and stayed in the hopsital for about 2 weeks during which time he was unable to eat and became progressively weaker. He was discharged to a rehab facility and within 3 days the "rehab" facility had managed to neglect him so badly that they had to call 911 due to heart problems from severe dehydration. He was admitted to the ICU once again septic, with a blood infection, tachycardia and in rapid afib with an acute kidney injury due to his dehydrated state. After about another week in the hospital with more decline, we were told he could either go to a nursing home or home hospice. They told us he is in decline and not to expect recovery.
This sickness has been particularly hard on him because of his three bouts of lymphoma, radiation and chemo. His immune system was just not able to combat the infection.
We opted for hospice. He receives the best care and comfort at home and every facility we visited seemed understaffed and ill equipped to provide the 1:1 care he needs. We will weather the storm with him wherever it leads us. He is mentally foggy but clearly relieved to be home.
Hospice provides major medical equipment, a nurse visit once a week and a CNA visit twice a week for an hour. This isn't much for someone who requires 24/7 care for everything from hand feeding to help using the bathroom. He can currently not walk or even sit up in bed without help. Every meal is hand fed.
My mom Sherry is his fulltime caregiver now, only leaving home when someone else trusted can sub in. We have had to hire a privately paid CNA at the going rate of $25 an hour to come in nearly every day to help with feeding and hygiene and physical therapy.
Anything you're willing to help to put toward his CNA care, or his supplies, medications, etc is greatly appreciated by the whole family. We just bought him home on the 10th of August and we are all running on fumes and caffeine; adjusting to our new normal but so happy to have him safely home. No more sleeping on hospital floors for us!
